Physical education develops pupils’ physical competence and confidence, and their ability to use these to perform in a range of activities. It promotes physical skilfulness, physical development and knowledge of the body in action. Physical education provides opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams. It promotes positive attitudes towards active and healthy life styles. Pupils learn how to think in different ways to suit a wide variety of creative, competitive and challenging activities. They learn how to plan perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve their quality and effectiveness. Through this process pupils discover their aptitudes, abilities and preferences, and make choices about how to get involved in lifelong physical activity.

Physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and improves concentration, but also promotes correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others. Therefore both teachers and children should be aware of its importance. PE develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. We should provide the broad and balanced programme of physical education and have activities designed to be enjoyable, vigorous, purposeful and regular. Through providing positive experiences, a lifelong interest in physical activity is encouraged, as well as promoting positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle.

INTENT

At Lightwater Village School we aim to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing for all pupils both now and in the future.  Physical fitness is an important part of leading a healthier lifestyle. It teaches self-discipline and to be successful you have to work hard, show resilience and have a determination to believe that anything can be achieved. It is our intent at Lightwater Village School to teach the children life skills that will positively impact on their future and to demonstrate how Physical Education plays a vital part in the development of the whole child.  We aim to provide every pupil at Lightwater Village School Infant School with 2 hours of high-quality PE per week.

  • All teachers are further encouraged to use a website “Jumpstart Jonny” which provides lots of different physical activities to do in class and these include warm ups, dance and other PE activities.
  • Some of the money from the sports funding has been used to employ specialist sports coaches who work alongside the class teachers and which introduce children to new sports including basketball, short tennis and fencing.
  • We have a variety of outside PE Coaches and can offer a wide range of before and after school sports clubs for pupils in Year 1 and Year 2 including fencing, gymnastics, dance, football and basketball.
  • In the summer term a week is set aside for a health and fitness week and the children have the opportunity to experience a variety of different sporting activities including a sports day.

IMPACT

  • P.E is taught as a basis for lifelong learning where children will have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if taught well and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a physically active life.
  • We help to motivate the children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is both engaging and fun.  From the PE lessons the children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness.
