GLF Schools

GLF Schools was founded in 2012 in order to enable the federation of Glyn School (an academy in 2011) and Danetree Junior School. Together, we began our journey to become a MAT of more than 1000 talented staff working with over 10,000 children in 40 schools across 5 regions in southern England.

Art and Design

The value held by the school, providing children with a range of practical, creative, and engaging experiences, has helped to guide the Art curriculum. The life skills learnt through Art are recognised and therefore the curriculum has been shaped to ensure that all children are aIMG 0366ble to access the learning and that there is clear progression throughout the school in each of the objectives, whilst providing an environment where children feel safe taking risks and are not intimidated by ‘getting it wrong’. The school has many resources and so allows the quality of the teaching and learning to be of a high standard thus inspiring.

Intent

Art and design scheme of work aims to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. The scheme Kapow Primary’s Art and Design is written by experts in their field and designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interest, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about the rich heritage and the culture of the British Isles and beyond.

Our curriculum works to support pupils to meet the National Curriculum end of key stage attainment targets and has been written to fully cover the National Society of Education in Art and Design progression competencies.

Implementation

The Kapow art scheme of work is design with strands than run throughout. These are:

  • Making Skills
  • Formal elementsIMG 0442
  • Knowledge of artists
  • Evaluating

Through the teaching of Art and design at lightwater village school, these strands are revisited in every unit. In art and design skills and formal elements of art units, pupils have the opportunity to learn and practise skills discretely. The knowledge and skills from these units are then applied throughout the teaching of Art within our school. Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Skills that are taught in each year group are written into the progression document and the attainment targets are securely met by the end of the Key Stage.

The art and design curriculum develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of key artists and art movements and units are linked to artists through practical work. The units scaffold and support essential and age-appropriate sequences learning and are flexible and adaptable. Creativity and independent outcomes are robustly embedded into the units of work, supporting students learning in how to make their creative choices and decisions so that their art outcomes, whilst being knowledge rich, are unique to the pupils and persons.

Lessons are always practical and encourage experimental and exploratory learning. Differentiated guidance is available for each lesson to ensure that the lessons can be accessed and enjoyed by all pupils and opportunities to stretch pupils learning are available. Knowledge organisers for each unit support pupils in building a foundation of factual knowledge by encouraging recall of key facts and vocabulary.

Kapow supports teachers who lack confidence in their own artistic abilities. Pupil videos have been created by subject specialist to help children to see art techniques modelled by experts, to ensure that the delivery of Art is of the highest quality. Each unit of lessons includes multiple teacher videos to develop subject knowledge and support ongoing CPD. Kapow has been created with the understanding that many teachers may not feel confident delivering full art and design curriculum and every effort have been made to support teachers to deliver lessons of a high standard that ensure pupil progression.

Impact

The  curriculum is designed in such a way that children are involved in the evaluation, dialogue and decision making about the quality of their outcomes IMG 8405and the improvements they need to make. By taking part in regular decision making about the quality of their outcomes and the improvements they need to make. By taking part in regular discussions and decision-making processes the children will not only know facts about their own learning journey, have higher metacognitive skills and have a growing understanding of how to improve.

The impact of the Kapow Primary scheme can be constantly monitored through both formative and summative assessment opportunities. Each lesson includes guidance to support teachers in assessing pupils against learning objectives and/or at the end of the unit of work.

After the implementation of the Kapow Primary Art and design scheme, pupils should leave with skills, techniques, confidence, and creativity that equips them to further their learning in Junior School.

The expected impart is that children will:

  • Produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas
  • Be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art and craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using subject specific language
  • Know about great artists and the historical and cultural development of their art
  • Meet end of key stage expectations outlined in the national curriculum.
