Languages
From Year 3 onwards, pupils have the opportunity to learn Spanish. The curriculum focuses on developing students' understanding of phonology, grammar, and vocabulary, providing a solid foundation for future language learning. Students explore the similarities and differences between Spanish and English, enabling them to build confidence in their language skills. This foundation prepares them for further language learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond, opening up opportunities for further education and international communication.
In line with the government’s aims set out in the Languages Programme of Study (National Curriculum England), this approach will enable pupils to make substantial progress in one language, applying the language skills and knowledge acquired to the study of further languages.
Pupils will develop their knowledge and understanding of the phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary of Spanish and be able to make comparisons between the languages’ similarities and differences with English. The transferable language skills that the pupils develop will provide them with a foundation for learning further languages at KS3 and beyond.
